Nocturne is a paranormal romance series published by Silhouette (Harlequin). It was launched in the fall of 2006. Some amazing authors contribute to this line, including Pamela Palmer, Lori Devoti and Karen Whiddon. The books cover the entire paranormal world: vampires, shifters, supernatural guardians, demons, witches and more. Because I love paranormal romances, I challenged myself to read every book from the Nocturne series in order. I got a late start, so many of the early books were out-of-print. That did not stop me! I was able to find nice copies from the Amazon Marketplace and eBay. Now I am a member of their Reader Service, and I get automatic shipments of the four newest titles every two months.
The first book in the series is UNFORGIVEN by Lindsay McKenna. The story centers around two “Warriors for the Light” who are also shape-shifters. Calen Hernandez and Reno Manchahi are brought together by destiny to find the first of seven emerald spheres that make up the Emerald Key necklace. This necklace, in the hands of the Light, will bring about 1000 years of peace on earth. However, dark forces are also on a quest for the necklace to produce the opposite effect. Overall, this book was an enjoyable read for me. I particularly liked the heroine, Calen Hernandez. She was strong, intelligent and independent, not a delicate waif waiting to be rescued.
This is not a stand-alone book; it mainly sets the foundation for the rest of the series to come. There is a lot of background information given about the prophecy of the Emerald Key, which is good if you intend to read the rest of the series. The paranormal elements were interesting (shape-shifting, powerful emeralds). However, I thought that the romance was light. I would recommend this book if you are planning to read other books from the Warriors for the Light series.
